The Riverside County Department of Waste Resources, provides free household hazardous waste (HHW) drop off events throughout the year.  For specific locations and times for 2023, please view this HHW flyer, or call Riverside County at 800.304.2226. Riverside County HHW events now offer safe medication disposal.

A typical home can contain a vast array of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) products used for cleaning, painting, beautifying, lubricating and disinfecting the house, yard, workshop and garage.

The chemical-based household products from a single home may seem insignificant; but, when thousand of homes across the Coachella Valley use similar products — handling, storing and disposing of them improperly — the combined effect becomes a major problem. The health and safety of people and animals, as well as the health of our communities and the environment is endangered when these types of products are discarded in household garbage, sinks or stormdrains.

The City of Indio, in partnership with the City of Coachella, oversees an ABOP (Antifreeze, Batteries, Oil, Filters, and Paint ) Drop-off Collection Center located at the Waste Transfer Station off Dillon Road. This Facility only accepts antifreeze, batteries, oil, filters and paint. Hours of operation are 8-5 Monday through Friday and 8-Noon on Saturday.

Besides the ABOP collection center, Burrtec, the City's waste and recycling collection hauler, offers curbside pickup of up to 5 gallons of used motor oil to all Indio residents.

Riverside County operates a permanent Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility at 1100 Vella Road, Palm Springs, CA 92264. The operating hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturdays October through May and 7:00 a.m. to noon Saturdays June through September. This facility accepts all HHW types.

Household hazardous wastes when disposed of improperly (pouring wastes down the drain, on the ground, into storm drains, or putting them out with the trash) can effect human health and the environment. The dangers of improper disposal may not be immediately obvious, but certain types of household hazardous waste have the potential to cause physical injury to trash workers; contaminate groundwater; contaminate wastewater treatment systems if poured down drains or toilets; and present hazards to children and pets if left around the house.
