The City of Indio consolidates with the Riverside County Registrar of Voters Office for all municipal elections. General Municipal elections for the City of Indio are held on the first Tuesday in November of even-numbered years for the purpose of electing City Council Members or placing special measures before the community.

In September 2017, the City Council adopted an ordinance transitioning to district-based elections commencing with the November 2018 election. In a district-based election system, the city is divided into separate geographic districts and a Council Member is chosen by the electors residing in that district. A Council Member must be a resident of the district to which they are elected.
