Waste collection guide

Burrtec currently serves as the provider for residential and commercial solid waste collection services. If you need to start or change your service, report any issues, or inquire about other services offered by Burrtec, simply call (760) 340-2113. Their customer service department is available Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm.

For vacation holds on waste service, use the convenient Burrtec Vacation Hold Form and submit the necessary information to Burrtec. Should you have any questions about the process, don't hesitate to reach out to the customer service department at (760) 340-2113.

Residential garbage and recyclables are collected weekly on the designated garbage service day. Commercial customers have the option for more than one service per week.

For your convenience, the city provides unlimited opportunities for residential customers to dispose of Bulky Items and Electronic Waste for free. Bulky items include hard-to-dispose-of objects like old sofas, chairs, and refrigerators. Meanwhile, Electronic Waste encompasses items like computer screens and printers, which contain harmful contaminants that should never be disposed of in regular trash. Please contact Burrtec to arrange proper disposal of these items at no cost or download the flyer. For further details on Electronic Waste disposal, you can visit CalRecycle.

NOTE: Hazardous Waste Materials cannot be disposed of in your regular curbside trash or recycling containers. For proper disposal of hazardous materials such as oil-based paint, car batteries, refrigerators, air conditioning units, televisions, computer monitors, pesticides, and similar items, call (760) 391-4129. You may also dispose of some hazardous materials at the Coachella/Indio Waste Transfer Station, located at 87-011 Landfill Road, Coachella, CA, 92236

Solid Waste Ordinance

The following lists some highlights of the City's regulations regarding garbage collection:

• The franchised garbage hauler must be the provider of garbage collection service. Currently, Burrtec is the franchised hauler.
• Garbage and garbage containers shall not be left at curbside for more than 24 hours.
• Waste Diversion Mandate
  The California Integrated Waste Management Act, also known as AB 939, requires that each city and county in California reduce the amount of waste disposed to the landfill by 50% from 1990 levels by the year 2000, and to maintain the 50% level thereafter. Municipalities face penalties of up to $10,000 per day for failure to comply. That is why diversion from construction sites, commercial and industrial, multi-family residential, single-family residential is very important to the City.
• SB 1383 California's Greenhouse Gas Reduction Law: 

SB 1383 is a crucial California law that targets methane emissions, part of efforts to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. It requires businesses dealing with organic waste to decrease disposal levels, including food, green material, paper products, and more. The goal is to cut GHG emissions by 40% below 1990 levels by 2030. SB 1383 works with AB 341 and AB 1826, setting ambitious recycling and organics recycling goals. This law surpasses previous regulations and strengthens California's commitment to combat climate change and promote responsible waste management.
