Fire Explorer Post 86
The Indio Fire Services participates in a worksite based Fire Explorer program for young men and women who have completed the eighth grade and are 14 years of age to 21 years of age. This Fire Explorer “Post” is operated out of the Headquarters Fire Station 86 at 46-990 Jackson Street in Indio. For young men and women who are interested in careers with the fire service, this program offers experimental learning with lots of fun filled hands on activities that promote the growth, character and development of adolescent youth. Fire Explorer Cadets meet weekly to train and learn firefighting skills using actual fire tools and equipment in a safe, supervised environment. Some Fire Explorer Posts compete in “Fire Muster” events throughout Southern California using firefighting skills learned by participating in the program. Color, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic background, economic status and citizenship are not criteria for participation in the Learning for Life, Indio Fire Services, Fire Explorer Program.
For additional information on the Learning for Life Fire Explorer program, visit the RVC Fire website.
As trained firefighters, volunteers respond side by side with Career firefighters to structure and vehicle fires, medical Emergencies, traffic accidents, hazardous materials, floods and other emergencies. Volunteer firefighters also participate in public education, fire prevention programs and equipment displays during the City’s many Festivals. In 2003, Volunteer Firefighters participated in over 2500 hours of training, and provided over 6000 hours of emergency service and stand bys.
Being a volunteer provides great training and the ability for you to give something back to your community. The Volunteer Company is open to all able-bodied persons age 17 years and over.
