The Indio Police Department has benefited from the use of police service dogs for many years. There are currently three active K-9 teams and are led by Sergeant Jeff Bottoms. Officers Santos and Studer along with their German Shepard partners Asko and Loki are trained for patrol duty and narcotics detection while Officer Mendez and his Golden Retriever partner Mikey are trained for narcotics and gun powder detection. The unit is often called upon to help recover discarded or hidden evidence, locate suspects, missing children or adults, and perform demonstrations for the public at schools, hospitals, and other community events. The Indio Police Department is grateful to the community which has enabled purchase and training of all police service dogs entirely through the use of private donations.
