Input needed for new proposed Sports Park

Virtual and public meetings planned

From soccer fields to pickle ball courts, splash pads to baseball diamonds, the City of Indio is looking for ideas to build a major park in the heart of town.

In order to obtain grants to fund the project, the City is holding a series of five virtual and in-person meetings in September and October. Once the City receives ideas from the public, they will be submitted to the state as part of the grant application process. Grants will be awarded to projects based on outreach and committed funding, among other criteria.

“We don’t want to suggest what goes into this potential park,” said Mike Edgar, City of Indio Parks and Facilities Project Coordinator. “We may believe people would like a picnic space, and find out they prioritize play toys or biking paths. It’s important to understand what our residents want and need most.”

The proposed Sports Park complex is a 39 acre parcel owned by the City of Indio, west of Jackson St. between Ave. 44 and Market St.

“This is more than a neighborhood park,” added Mayor Glenn Miller. “This would be a place-making City Park that residents and visitors alike would view as a defining sports destination, getting more children and adults involved in recreation, and hopefully even drawing people to Indio for amateur sports.”
