The United States Constitution (Article 1, Section 2) requires an “actual enumeration” of the population living in the United States, citizens or noncitizens alike, every 10 years. Nearly $700 billion in federal funds for schools, hospitals and other public works projects are based on Census data. Therefore, a complete and accurate count of the City of Indio’s population is essential. The data collected by the Census determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and is used to distribute BILLIONS of dollars in federal funds to state and local governments (cities like Indio). The data is also used in the redistricting of state legislatures, county boards of supervisors and city councils. All that means Indio’s complete count will ultimately render greater resources, representation, and economic development.
As of the latest data provided on July 6, at 48.6%, Indio's participation rate was the lowest of any city in the Coachella Valley.
The 2020 Census provides an opportunity for everyone to be counted only once and in the right place. However, COVID-19 is one of several challenges facing Census 2020, and is leading the City of Indio to emphasize online awareness. The City is encouraging all its residents to complete the online self-response BEFORE October 31, 2020.
