Indio Senior Center Offers Alzheimer’s Support Groups
Written by Christian Maciel
The Alzheimer’s Association has been serving the Coachella Valley for over twenty years. Our vision is a world without Alzheimer’s disease, and our work reflects our dedication to provide support, education, information and referral assistance that will help our local community living with Alzheimer’s disease and their families.
Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we are announcing an Indio-based Alzheimer’s Association Support Group for caregivers dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, or a dementia-related disease. The Alzheimer’s Association, Coachella Valley is partnering with the Indio Senior Center to host a support group for caregivers and/or care partners helping to manage the disease day-to-day. It is important to note that seventy percent of caregivers pass away before the person with disease. This is an alarming statistic that points to the importance of self-care for the caregiver, and joining and participating in a support group can be an important part of that plan. Support groups serve as a wonderful venue for emotional support, learning, sharing, and ultimately taking the time for a necessary break to recharge and refresh. Support groups are completely confidential, and members understand that trust is at the center of their bond and support of each other. Current support group members have repeatedly revealed that their participation in a support group has been life-changing and in some cases, life-saving. In addition, support groups provide a place for learning strategies, techniques, tips and lessons from those who may be ahead of you in the journey through Alzheimer’s Disease. There is no cost, and the support group facilitator is comprehensively trained and continuously supported and educated through the Alzheimer’s Association to provide meaningful assistance, support, and direction.
The Alzheimer’s Association Support Group in Indio meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 10:00 – 11:00 am, at the Indio Senior Center located at 45-700 Aladdin St, Suite #100, Indio. Please call our office to RSVP at 760-996-0006.
In addition to our support groups, the Alzheimer’s Association offers classes and programs throughout the Coachella Valley. Central to our programs is our Living with Alzheimer’s series, which provides education, practical strategies, and guidelines for caregivers dealing with the challenges they will face during the early, middle and late stages of their loved one’s journey through Alzheimer's Disease. Other core programs we offer include “Dementia Conversations” and “Caring for the Caregiver”.
We also offer an art-based, social engagement program for people with early to middle-stage Alzheimer’s. Art Expressions is a three-part series that provides an artistic and activity-based avenue for improving quality of life, stimulating memory, and offering a fun and interactive way for caregivers and their loved ones with Alzheimer’s to interact in new and positive ways.
If you or someone you know, is dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease, please contact our office at 760-996-0006 to receive our calendar of events and classes, as well as to attend any of our support groups. We are your partner in the journey through Alzheimer’s Disease.
