It’s June and Indio is on fire. No, not the weather, I’m speaking of the tremendous amount of growth happening across the city. When it comes to attracting investment and development, there is nowhere hotter than Indio. Our Economic Development team is just back from a major economic summit in Las Vegas, and we are excited to report a high level of interests from developers looking to call Indio home. It is no surprise there is development everywhere you turn.
Our local construction crews are taking advantage of the summer recess to complete several local school projects. Indio High School is in the final stages of a multi-year rebuild with major construction taking place on the final phase. Hoover Elementary School is undergoing modernization that will include a new administration building, new classroom building, new multipurpose building, and a parking lot expansion off Monroe St. Construction work is scheduled to be completed this fall. A new elementary school will also be under way soon at the intersection of Gore St. and 42nd. The mass grading work started in mid-April with the school scheduled to open its doors for the start of the 2018-2019 school year. Finally, College of the Desert will also be launching major expansion soon, nearly doubling the size of the downtown Indio campus to accommodate an additional 4,000 plus students.
On the retail and hospitality front, ground breakings are occurring across the city. The new Neighborhood Walmart store located on Fred Waring Dr. near Jefferson St. will add almost 20,000 square feet of shopping for our locals, as well as 50 full-time jobs. The construction project is set to be completed in December. The new Sonic Drive-In on Jefferson St. near Indio Blvd. is scheduled to open this fall. In north Indio, a new Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriot will stretch across a 3.69 acre development off of Jackson St. The new hotel, which broke ground last week, will add 120 rooms to our city and will be completed in Spring of 2018. Lastly, the new I-10 Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep & Ram Dealership will be completed next month, adding 90 full-time and 25 part-time jobs to our economy.
To support our rapid growth, several infrastructure improvement projects are under way. The seventy-one million dollar Jefferson Street Interchange project is approaching completion. This major gateway to the City of Indio and the east Coachella Valley will increase vehicle capacity, reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and safety, and drive economic development into Indio. The Valley Sanitary District’s Requa Sewer Project, which is installing 22,000 feet of new sewer main line through the heart of the city, will create capacity for major development along Highway 111 and is scheduled to be completed later this year. We are also excited at the tremendous progress being made on the new Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Pediatric Clinic. With our growth, we need to expand the services available to our growing population. The clinic will open in 2018 and help serve 135,000 children in the region by offering pediatric services, urgent care, lab imaging, and physical therapy. You may have also noticed work being done at Miles Avenue Park. Phase one of the project includes creating parking lots and pedestrian paths, which will be completed by the end of summer.
There will be plenty of hardhats, orange vests and cranes operating across our city this year. Know that we are committed at the highest levels to bringing our residents the very best services, amenities, and economic opportunities available. While we continue this rapid expansion we will remain open for business, even through the summer heat.
