Indio’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) – The Year End Review

Submitted by: The Indio Youth Advisory Council (YAC)

Now that 2017-18 school year is coming to a close, the Indio Youth Advisory Council is seeking eager youth who would like to join our group. Membership is open to ALL 9th-12th grade students who reside in the City of Indio and hold a G.P.A. of 2.5 or better. If you’re interested in being more involved in your community, enjoy community service and want to learn more about local government, then pick up a YAC application at the Indio Teen Center.

This year, the YAC participated in the Palm Springs Museum Dia De Los Muertos event – installing the community altar that provided the backdrop for their big community event. The YAC also volunteered with the Narrow Door by helping feed the needy and homeless at Miles Park on Thanksgiving morning, and assisted with the DisAbility Sports Festival by helping with hand cycling and their chalk art. The group attended several youth summits throughout Southern California, and are now collaborating with Friday Night Live and the Desert Recreation District to host a Youth Summit for Coachella Valley youth.

Summer in Indio (June 14th – August 10th)

The Indio Teen Center will be open Monday-Thursday from 1:30-6:30 p.m., offering daily educational and recreational programs. Membership is FREE and open to all 8th-12th grade students, regardless of what city you reside in. Intergenerational Olympics returns every Monday, beginning June 18th at 2 p.m., where 10 teens and 10 seniors (from the Indio Senior Center) are teamed up and compete in various ‘minute to win it’ competitions in order to win some gift cards to local businesses. Plus, there will also be summer trips with weekly college campus tours and beach trips!
