Submitted by: the Indio Youth Advisory Council (YAC)
On Friday, April 13th, the Indio Youth Advisory Council joined a couple hundred other teen leaders from across Riverside County at the 20th Annual Riverside County Youth Summit put on by the Riverside County Youth Commission.
Various high schools throughout the county sent their leadership groups and Associated Student Body (ASB) Clubs; as well as representatives from every county district. Students convened at the Moreno Valley Community Center for a day of learning. Topics covered included youth civic engagement, safety preparedness/self-defense, and rape culture/domestic violence.
The personal favorite presenter of YAC was Lauren Roselle, founder & CEO of Esteem: Communication for Life.Roselle provided excellent self-defense skills. Her main lesson in self-defense was if you are in a questionable situation, always use your voice to avoid being frozen in fear and aim for the four weak points: eyes, throat, groin, and knees.
Now Accepting Applications for New YAC Members
YAC is excited to announce that they are currently accepting applications for new YAC Members. Membership is open to all Indio High School students, including current 8th graders going into high school next school year, who reside in the City of Indio and have a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0 or better. If you are interested in being more involved in your community, enjoy community service and want to learn more about local government, pick up a YAC application at the Indio Teen Center.
