The 2018 Heritage Festival Celebrates History & Culture March 17

Those who attend the 2018 Heritage Festival – scheduled to take place Saturday, March 17 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Coachella Valley History Museum in Indio – will have the opportunity to step back in time and learn about the cultures that led to the settlement of the Coachella Valley.

The festival showcases the personal histories of Cahuilla, Mexican, Anglo, Black, Japanese and Armenian families by means of entertainment and exhibits. In addition, foods representing these cultures will be featured throughout the day.

Folkloric dancers, the Second Baptist Mass Gospel Choir, Sandblasters Barbershop, singers, fiddlers and Japanese Koshin Taiko drummers will be showcased at the Heritage Festival, and early American craft demonstrators will also be on hand.

Junior historian actors will be placed around the campus portraying our valley’s trailblazers. Children can participate in old-fashioned games and activities, such as sack-and-egg races, jump rope, clothespin doll-making, origami folding, Cahuilla crafts, dress-a-dolly and Aunt Polly’s wash room.

Enjoy watching a blacksmith, weavers, spinners and wood carvers at work –as well as potters, paper crafters, leather working, vintage tractors and “story boards “ that detail their timelines and presence in the Coachella Valley. Visitors can also take a jeep tour of the murals in Downtown Indio.

In addition, the grounds of the Museum boast many vintage exhibits and buildings including the 1927 Dr. Smiley-Tyler adobe home – surrounded by a complete blacksmith shop and farm equipment – the 1909 one-room Indio Public Schoolhouse and the Date Museum. The grounds also feature a memorial Japanese garden, the Dr. Carreon Desert Garden, a Memorial Rose Garden, a working date garden and a Cahuilla ethnobotanical garden.

This family-friendly event is free to the community. For more information, go to CVHM.org or (760) 342-6651. The Coachella Valley History Museum is located at 82-616 Miles Avenue in Indio.
