The Alzheimer’s Association of the Coachella Valley

Written by Christian A. Maciel, Ph.D., L.M.F.T

The Alzheimer’s Association of the Coachella Valley is continuing its mission to serve the eastern Coachella Valley by establishing a new partnership with the Indio Branch Library. Recently, the Indio Branch Library has undergone an exciting and extensive remodel, with a new layout, new furnishings, new events and modern technologies for all the residents of Indio to enjoy.

The Alzheimer’s Association of the Coachella Valley would like to acknowledge Indio Branch Library Manager, Mr. Casey Bowen, for partnering with us to help educate and empower Indio families living with Alzheimer's disease. The first educational class, titled “Healthy Living for the Brain and Body”, took place on January 30, and was an amazing success! The Alzheimer’s Association invites all the residents of the City of Indio to contact the Indio Branch Library at 760-347-2383 or stop by and sign up for the next class on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at 1:30 pm.  The class is entitled, “The Basics of Alzheimer’s”. The class will be for anyone who would like to learn what Alzheimer's disease is, and how it affects the brain. Handouts will be provided at no cost. The Indio Branch Library is located at 200 Civic Center Mall, Indio, 92201. Space is limited, so reserve your place as soon as possible. You can also call the Alzheimer's Association office at 760-996-0006 for more information, and to RSVP.

Additionally, as an important reminder for all Indio residents, the Alzheimer’s Association continues the Indio-based Support Group for caregivers dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, or a dementia-related disease. It is important to note that seventy percent of caregivers pass away before the person with disease. This is an alarming statistic that points to the importance of self-care for the caregiver, and joining and participating in a support group can be an important part of that plan. Support groups serve as a wonderful venue for emotional support, learning, sharing, and ultimately taking the time for a necessary break to recharge, refresh and to hear from people who may be ahead of you in the Alzheimer's journey. Support groups are completely confidential, and members understand that trust is at the center of their bond and support of each other.  There is no cost, and the support group facilitator is comprehensively trained and continuously supported and educated through the Alzheimer’s Association to provide meaningful assistance, support, and direction. The Alzheimer’s Association Support Group at the Indio Senior Center meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 10:00 – 11:30 am, at the Indio Senior Center located at 45-700 Aladdin St, Suite #100, Indio. Please call our office to RSVP at 760-996-0006.

If you or someone you know is dealing with Alzheimer ’s disease, please contact our office at 760-996-0006 to receive our calendar of events and classes, as well as to attend any of our support groups. We are your partner in the journey through Alzheimer ’s disease.
