Youth & Community Meet to Revamp Youth Master Plan
Last month, community members and 6 teens from the Youth Advisory Council met at the Indio Teen Center to update the Youth Master Plan, which addresses the needs of Indio Youth. Community turnout was impressive, including Mayor Pro Tem Michael Wilson and representatives from the YMCA, Center for Employment Training, Desert Recreation District, Friday Night Live, Indio Youth Sports Association, and Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest.
Teens, community members, and partner representatives formed breakout groups, sharing opinions and exchanging ideas. Each group had a least one representative from the Indio Youth Advisory Council, who reported survey results from over 1,500 students at Coachella Valley Schools.
The goal of the meeting was simple: give the youth of Indio a platform to have their voices heard. This should come as no surprise, as Indio has been named one of the Nation's 100 Best Communities for Young People in years past, reflecting Indio's commitment to the success of its youth.
The recommendations developed during the meeting will be drafted into an updated Youth Master Plan, which will then pass through review by several bodies before it is finally presented to the Indio City Council for approval.
"The last Youth Master Plan brought about the creation of the Indio Teen Center and the renovation of Indio parks, among other things" reports Rosalva Campos, Community Program Administrator at the Indio Teen Center. "I look forward to seeing the culmination of youth surveys and the community meeting input presented in the updated YMP."
