City Manager's Message - May 2017

Another successful April is behind us.  In what has become an annual rite of passage to summer, the City successfully hosted three of the largest music festivals in the world.  I want to thank you for your patience as we mitigated traffic issues during an unprecedented number of concert attendees this year. City staff has already been meeting with Goldenvoice and Empire Polo Club to improve traffic plans for next year and have taken many of your concerns and suggestions under consideration to improve the experience for you and our guests. I also want to commend our public safety and public works teams for another job well done, as well as thank our partners at Goldenvoice and Empire Polo Club for their investment and cooperation in executing these mega-events.  It is a true team effort!

As the crowds of visitors drove away to make the trip home, the city was already turning its attention to a packed schedule of events ahead for our local residents. At the top of the list is the first ever City of Indio's Fantasia Comic Con coming to the Riverside County Fairgrounds from May 19th through the 21st.  Indio will once again be a gathering spot for celebrities, welcoming some of the best entertainers from the world of film and literature for this three-day event. Just two weekends later, downtown will come alive with the annual Indio Community Block Party on June 3rd.  Now in its third year, the Block Party has quickly grown to become the locals’ celebration of community, with live entertainment, art and culture all kicking off summer in style.

Summer in Indio will also see a full schedule of events for our local youth.  Desert Theatreworks, through their new partnership with the City, will be hosting a youth theater camp this summer along with art and music programs by Culturas Music and Arts so IPAC will be jam-packed with opportunity for local kids.  The Indio Teen Center, Indio Community Center, and local clubs will also host a variety of affordable summer camps and programs for our youth.

The City is proud to have been named one of the Nation's 100 Best Communities for Young People in years past, and we continue to honor that tradition by working closely with the community.  The City recently met with the Youth Advisory Council and community members at the Indio Teen Center to update the Youth Master Plan, which addresses the needs of Indio youth.  The City of Indio is committed to actively investing in the future - our children.

With a packed schedule ahead, there is truly something for everyone in Indio.  The music has come to an end, but for our residents the fun is just beginning.  Bring on summer!
